About

I’m Tamara Burrows and I started Amarta to produce principled, evidence-led research, even when it challenges dominant narratives. With early training as a clinical psychologist, and a PhD focused on violence against women, this grounding shapes my commitment to research that listens to and honours voices often excluded — women, LGB people, children and young people, those experiencing emotional distress, survivors of violence, war, and conflict.

My career prior to Amarta involved leading research in academia and for major social research agencies. I spent ten years working with organisations in the Middle East, including the UN, Save the Children, and Action Against Hunger, leading research and managing humanitarian response and development programmes focused on vulnerable populations, especially women and children.

I set up Amarta Research to bring together two decades of experience across academia, public policy research, and the international NGO sector, in service of organisations working on complex and contested issues. I’ve led over 100 research projects, using mixed methods to inform policy development, guide strategic planning, sharpen campaign messages, and evaluate humanitarian responses.
